In its quest to win the bid for one of Pennsylvania’s casino gaming licenses, the Las Vegas Sands Corp. is actively courting both the public and the regulatory board.
The casino gaming licenses will be distributed in June, at the earliest. However, the Sands employees behind the company’s extensive public relations drive are already hard at work.
The Sand’s latest priority is to assure the public that, if it wins the casino gaming license, it will prioritize diversity in its hiring practices. This is one of the criteria on which the applicants will be judged.
To this end, the Sands held a workshop today for women and minorities who own businesses in the Bethlehem-Allentown area. The purpose of the workshop was to explain the type of goods and services the Sands will need if its casino games gaming license bid is successful.
One hundred and fifty- seven individuals, sixty percent of whom are from the Bethlehem- Allentown region, signed up for the workshop. Represented businesses included florists, caterers, an advertising firm, an insurance firm, photographers, financial consultants, accounting firms, and builders.
Local figures attribute the high turnout to the fact that the casino gaming company hired local community organizations to help make the event a success. The Sands hired the Community Action Development Corp. of Bethlehem, the Hispanic Chamber of the Lehigh Valley, the Small Business Development Center at Lehigh University and the Tri-City African American Chamber of Commerce to promote the event.
The company urged businesses that are owned by women or minorities to register themselves as such with their respective counties.
”This gets them in the fold and they know ahead of time whether they have a business that [qualifies],” said Andy Abboud, Sands VP of government relations and community development. ”They’ll be ahead of the game should we be fortunate enough to get a gaming license.”
In addition to promising to give preference to businesses owned by women and minorities, the Sands has also assured the public that it will give back to the community by preserving its unique, largely industrial, history.
The online casino gaming company will donate land for a proposed SteelStax arts park and the National Museum of National History. It will also work to preserve many of the industrial buildings used by the former Bethlehem Steel Corp.
